Our First Breath Under Water | Moal Boal, Cebu

This is a post by THH Louie.

I was so excited for Day 2, I was not able to sleep well the night before. Finally, scuba diving day it is. The main reason why I was so stoked for this trip to Cebu. 🙂 Wake up call; 7am. We went to the local carinderia for a budget friendly breakfast.

Upon reaching the place, 2 lovely women approached us to sell sea food. We were amazed by the bucket full of sea urchins and kinilaw na sea cucumber! And Jon just cant say no to sea urchin, his all time favorite island food. In every island we went to, he would always ask the locals for “swaki”. 🙂  Sea urchin roe tastes salty with a sweet and creamy after taste while the sea cucumber has a bland and a tiny bit of fishy taste to it and eating it feels like you are eating rubber.

At 9Am we began our Discover SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) Diving session with the PADI instructors, the first part started with a video about the basics and the do’s and dont’s of diving. We also signed up medical forms, waivers and other significant documents. I never realized how dangerous it can get when not done right.  I was nervous at this stage but when we are asked to gear up, all my nervousness went away in a snap.  We were each given a mask, wetsuit, boots, fins and tanks. 🙂

Once geared up, we went to the swimming pool where we were given hands on training and experienced our first breath underwater. It’s where all the theories came to life! Skills training it is. 🙂

We were taught how to breathe underwater which is quite easy as it is just breathing through your mouth really (just imagine you have a bad cold and you have to breathe through your mouth). The hard part is resisting the urge to hold your breath (Golden Rule of SCUBA diving; DO NOT HOLD YOUR BREATH EVER.)!

We were also taught how to retrieve our regulators and how to clear the water out from it in case the regulator drifts away or gets pulled out. They also taught us how to clear water from the mask (which I found difficult! Seriously I almost cried because I couldn’t do it properly at the start) and how to swim properly with fins underwater. After all the safety instructions, we hit the open water!

The most challenging part was carrying our tanks when were out of the water! It weighed about 20 kilos, that’s almost half my body weight! My legs were shaking but still I would do it all over again if I had the chance to come back. 🙂

Moalboal is blessed to have such great and amazing underwater ecosystem. It is definitely worth a visit if you are ever in Cebu.

30 minutes of open water diving is not enough. We want more!! This dive definitely won’t be our last.  🙂 Thank you Aquaholics for taking care of us. 🙂 See you soon! 🙂
